Test and Inspection Frequency
Standard scuba tanks typically carry air pressurized up to 3,500 psi, or pounds per square inch. If a tank has sustained damage that makes it unable to safely hold air at such high pressures, it poses a serious safety risk. Damaged or improperly manufactured tanks can explode when filled with high pressure air. To ensure that a tank can safely hold pressurized air, you must have it tested and inspected by professionals.
The United States Department of Transportation requires that scuba tanks undergo hydrostatic tank testing every five years and licenses companies to perform this procedure. Some countries require tanks to undergo such testing as often as once a year. Any tank with dents, visible damage, leakage or signs of corrosion must be tested before use, even if it has been tested within the last five years. Scuba tanks must also undergo visual inspection once a year.
